Second Life Birthday: What SLB Is and Why It Still Matters

Every June, Second Life throws itself a birthday party. Not the sad kind with one deflated balloon and supermarket cake sweating under fluorescent lights. This is Second Life, so naturally the birthday becomes a sprawling multi-region festival of resident-made exhibits, stages, music, performances, shopping, art, historical displays, and builds that could only exist in a virtual world.

The event is known as Second Life Birthday, abbreviated each year by number: SL20B, SL21B, SL22B, SL23B. The number reflects how many years have passed since Second Life opened to the public on 23 June 2003.

For 2026, the event is SL23B, running from 18 June to 19 July 2026. The theme is The Golden Age of Hollywood: classic cinema, red carpets, vintage glamour, and the silver screen.

What Actually Happens

The birthday event has several distinct parts that run across dedicated regions for the full celebration period.

Community exhibits are the heart of it. Residents, groups, and creators apply to build on official birthday regions. These can be art installations, historical displays, group showcases, interactive builds, memorials, or theme-based creations. It is not just Linden Lab showing off. It is the grid showing itself to itself.

Live music and performances run throughout the month: concerts, DJs, dance shows, theatre, spoken word, machinima screenings, talks. People attend as avatars, stand with other people, chat, and become part of the room. Second Life is still one of the few online spaces where live virtual events have a genuinely embodied culture.

Shop and Hop is the official shopping event tied to SLB, bringing together merchants across multiple regions with gifts, discounts, new releases, and themed items. For many residents it is the most visible part of the birthday, but it is not the whole thing.

Linden and Mole builds are official constructions by Linden Lab staff and the Moles, the resident contractors behind many public Linden projects. These tend to become major photo locations, particularly when the annual theme gives them something dramatic to work with. For The Golden Age of Hollywood, expect studios, spotlights, red carpets, and at least one build you will photograph twelve times while muttering about how ridiculous it is.

A Brief History

Second Life launched publicly on 23 June 2003, created by Linden Lab founder Philip Rosedale. By the 20th anniversary, the platform had seen more than 73 million accounts created and around 750,000 monthly active users.

The birthday tradition started immediately. On 23 June 2004, the first anniversary was marked with a gala parade, resident-made floats, festival activities, and a time capsule event. The second birthday in 2005 added a museum-style celebration across several regions, with large builds and images of Second Life over time.

By 2009 the familiar structure was firmly in place: applications, exhibitor builds, themes, dedicated regions, and extended visiting periods. The 10th birthday in 2013 brought a full month of celebrations including gifts, contests, inworld activities, and resident-organised exhibitions. SL22B in 2025 ran under the theme Myths and Legends from 20 June to 20 July.

Each year’s event becomes a snapshot of what Second Life communities are making, remembering, and choosing to show the wider grid. The birthday is one of the few places where the platform pauses and takes stock of its own history.

SL23B: The Golden Age of Hollywood

The 2026 theme suits Second Life well. The grid has always had something theatrical about it: avatars are costumes, regions are stages, and half the platform has at some point behaved like a dramatic silent film star having a very serious moment beside a fountain.

For exhibitors the theme opens obvious visual territory: old cinema, film noir streets, backstage spaces, theatres, reels, spotlights, and vintage glamour. It also leaves room for more critical angles: who gets seen, who gets erased, what performance means, how identity is staged, and how virtual worlds turn ordinary users into self-directed stars of their own tiny productions. The best SLB exhibits rarely just decorate the theme. They bend it.
